Iyanla Vanzant – Claim Your Joy Now!

I love Iyanla Vanzant. Homegirl is majorly gifted! I’ve read almost all of her books and was overjoyed to see her show debut on Oprah’s television network. It looks like the next place we’ll be seeing her is on the cover of Essence magazine. While February newsstands are usually filled with musings on romance and lame articles like How to Get a Guy in 10 Days, ESSENCE is tackling love of a different kind by prompting readers to find the joy within themselves.

To help them do it, the magazine tapped Vanzant, host of OWN Network’s “Fix My Life” for its cover feature: “Iyanla Says…Claim Your Joy Now!” in which she reveals 10 secrets to finding real and lasting happiness and one reason she will always have a reason to smile.

Here are three of Vanzant’s joy-channeling tips. To get the rest, check out the February issue of ESSENCE, which hits stands on January 11.

Organize Your Life: “Order is the first law of heaven, and you have to have order to survive on Earth. Figure out what has to be done each day, each week, each year and develop a system to achieve it…”

Strengthen Your Ties: ”What will support any relationship is clear, complete and conscious conversations when upsets or breakdowns occur. It wasn’t planned that the rebuilding of my relationship with Ms. Oprah Winfrey would be broadcast. However, it turned out that we demonstrated to the world and to women what is required to heal a relationship breakdown by being honest about what we felt and how we interpreted each other’s actions…”

Perfect Saying No: “You have a right to say no. Most of us have very weak and flaccid ‘no’ muscles. We feel guilty for saying no. We get ostracized and challenged for saying no, so we forget it’s our choice. Your no muscle has to be built up to get to a place where you can say, ‘I don’t care if that’s what you want. I don’t want that, no.’”
