You Love Me and I love You For It
You know, being a model is an oddly interesting career. Most people would argue that we don’t have any obvious talent and although we are fortunate enough to make a very comfortable living, most of us will never have celebrity status. That’s fine by me, but then again that’s where you start getting into a grey area.
While I’m no celebrity, I have to accept the fact that I do work in a career field that makes me somewhat of a public figure. That means my face is recognizable to a lot of people, even when they have no clue as to why. On the other hand, when it comes to true fans of fashion and lovers of natural hair, they KNOW their stuff, okay!
I always get a kick out of it when a someone walks up to me and ask if I’m Wakeema Hollis. Professionally, I only go by Hollis, but black women never fail to call me by my “government” name. What’s more, they never pronounce it wrong! I love that.
But what I love most is that natural hair fans are really genuine. Sometimes I’ll be mindlessly wondering around a store lost in my own world when I get approached by a fashionista or naturalista who recognizes me and we’ll have the coolest conversation, like old friends. At other times I’ve been out with some of my well known model friends and although it is obvious that a person recognizes them, they generally are never kind/bold/real enough to actually say something. Instead, they do the whole passive aggressive thing where they stare uncomfortably, attempt to take a sneaky photo with their phone, or whisper just loud enough for us to overhear the shade they’re throwing…Annoying!
Don’t get me wrong, not every woman with natural hair is full of sisterly love, not everyone says something nice and I too have had my share of dirty looks thrown my way for no reason. However, as a whole, you are the most warm, supportive, genuine and loving “fans” that a girl could ask for. (I use the word “fans” loosely cause I’m not delusional enough to think I actually have fans.) But the point is, you, yes YOU are amazing! You are loving, kind, full of encouragement. You keep it real! I can’t thank you enough for that. I get so much love from women of color and the natural hair community. I just want you to know it is not lost on me. You love me and I love you for that. Thank you.
