Blizzard Proof Hair Treatments
There was a blizzard in NYC over night. It’s quite a sight. The view from my window is lovely. Everything looks so beautiful and pristine in the freshly fallen snow, but the window is as far as I’m going in this weather! That means this is the perfect opportunity to pamper my tresses with some tlc and a steam treatment.
I found these recipes on BGLH (I love that blog) and I immediately envisioned my thirsty, winter wary strands drinking it all in while I have a moment like those women on the Herbal Essence commercials. Okay, maybe that’s a bit much, but I know my hair will feel like new afterwards. That’s all I ask of this snow day.
DIY Treatment for Moisture and Manageability
Bananas are great for natural hair. They add moisture while minimizing shrinkage. When you combine banana with other ingredients like glycerin, olive oil and honey, you get a deep treatment that’s packed with moisturizing and conditioning benefits. This is the ideal treatment for naturals looking to stretch their coils or achieve easier blow-outs.
1 large overripe banana (sliced) OR 7 oz banana baby food
4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp pure vegetable glycerin
2 tbsp pure honey
Place the sliced banana, extra virgin olive oil, glycerin, and honey all in a blender. Blend the ingredients thoroughly making sure no lumps or banana bits remain. Banana bits tend to get stuck in natural hair, so make sure your mixture is lump-free. Apply to hair and let sit for 30-45 minutes under a shower cap. Detangle, rinse thoroughly, and style as usual.
Hydrating + Detangling Deep Treatment
This homemade conditioner is emollient, thick and heavy, all of which give kinks slip, moisture, and hang for detangling. The avocado’s meatiness and fatty acid content is perfect for coating and conditioning dry, frazzled hair. The fatty acids in the olive oil combined with the emollient properties of Shea butter make this treatment even more of a moisture-packed power house. Lastly, the acidic pH of the ACV helps to flatten the cuticles for easier detangling. This conditioner is great for those with thick, dense hair and major shrinkage.
Perfect! We have a winner. I think I’ll be trying this one. Hydrating and detangling is just what the doctor ordered for my hair.
