Why Cold Weather = Bad News For Hair and Skin

By

snow

It’s frigid outside. Like, almost too frigid to cope. No matter where you live, chances are you will feel single digits or below if you dare brave the outside. Cold weather and its effects are more than just an uncomfortable feeling. The negative impact it has on our hair, skin and body are very real. Seriously, it’s, like, science!

Water, Heat and Your Hair

Some bonds in our hair can actually be broken (temporarily) by the application of heat and water. This why hair responds so drastically to being styled with blow-dryers, flat irons and wet sets. But when already styled hair is exposed to a hot, humid weather, it causes these bonds to break again, allowing the hair to return to its natural state. That’s why the lovely ladies of Team Natural have little hope of maintaining a strait hairstyle on a hot summer day.

Cold Weather & Your Hair

During winter the most common effect on hair comes from the cold. More specifically, it comes from the constant changes from cold to warm environments. The cold, dry air from outside can cause the cuticle layer of the hair to lift. When we finally get out of the cold and into a warm, dry interior environment, the lifted cuticles make our hair more susceptible to moisture loss, leaving it dry and frizzy. This can also create static, which makes for unruly hair and the headache that comes along with it.

Wind Damage

Wind can also cause damage to our hair. Exposure to strong persistent winds creates tangles and snags in curly or long hair. The wind pummels the hairs against one another,  roughening up the cuticle layer and causing hairs to catch on and wrap around one another. Hair that is constantly exposed to high winds can develop split ends as a result.

Cold Weather vs. Your Skin

It’s a similar situation with our skin. We’re made up of mostly water. So, our skin needs water (moisture) to keep its young, healthy appearance. When it’s crazy cold outside there is less moisture in the environment. This lack of moisture is compounded by wind, which blows moisture away from the skin. Then, we snuggle up in our warm and toasty homes which further leeches moisture from our skin.

The take away?

Cold weather is no joke! When we brave the cold and come in feeling a little beat up-it’s because, well, Mother Nature totally just pulled a one-two punch on us! Now that you’re informed, take the proper precautions to protect your skin, mane and mood from the negative effects of winter weather.
